(Calgary, 18/8/2008. World Paddle Championships for Padelcenter.com) World Paddle Championships get Official Proclamation.
Calgary, AB – Tuesday, August 19, 2008: Mayor Dave Bronconnier has officially proclaimed August 23 to 30, 2008 to be “Calgary Paddle Week” in honour of the 2008 World Paddle Championships taking place in the city.
The top men’s and women’s paddle teams, representing 19 countries from around the world, including: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay, USA, and Canada will compete in the eight day championship. A variety of social, cultural and recreational events will also take part as part of the event, which runs August 23 to 30 at the Calgary West Soccer Centre.
Over five million participants play paddle in more than 20 countries around the world, with Latin America and Europe being the locales where the sport is most strongly followed. The sport of paddle began in Canada in February of 1992, in Calgary, when the Paddle Association of Canada (PAC) was founded. Calgary is the first Canadian city to host an international Paddle event of this kind.
Paddle, an exciting racquet sport played on an enclosed tennis court by opposing pairs, features tennis-like court play with squash-like wall play in a fast-paced display of agility, athleticism and strategy. The last World Paddle (or “pádel” as it is known in other parts around the world) Championships were held in Spain in 2006, and were seen by millions of viewers around the globe. |
